G-Bone is porous hydroxyapatite with interconnected holes. The size of holes is such as to facilitate growth of tissue into the implant . average pore size may vary from 0.5 to 1mm. It is very fragile so it should be handled with precaution. Introduction
The G-Bone hydroxyapatite has been developed and manufactured by Surgiwear for the first time in India. The hydroxyapatite used in G-Bone has been derived from natural sources. Unlike other brands which are made either from synthetic or converted coral calcium carbonate. It is used to refill the gaps in bone and augmentation of bony structures. Hydroxyapatite is naturally present in our body as inorganic matrix of bone. Due to the fact that it is an inorganic substance / ceramic, it does not cause any foreign body reaction. Body treats it as part of the body, since it is naturally there, soft tissue grows into the G-Bone. After some time it mingles with natural tissues. Hydroxyapatite is apatite calcium phosphate (Ca10 (PO4)6(OH)2). It is also known as hydroxyapatite & HA. HA is being used in many disciplines of surgery and dental surgery. Indication: G-Bone is a revolutionary new implant material. It is indicated in all those places where bone is needed. Some of the uses are described below. These are only indicative and not exhaustive. Orthopedic surgery: G-Bone is very useful in everyday orthopedic surgery. In cases of non union of bone, the suitable HA powder is filled between the bone ends after making the ends raw. Bone cavities after removal of a bone cyst, benign tumors and after trauma may be filled using HA powder and or HA bocks. It has been observed by some researchers that re-growth of bone will be faster if the HA material is mixed with autologous bone marrow and autologous bone chips. The presence of some types of bone proteins will encourage the bone growth. Dental surgery: In dental surgery G-Bone may be used for augmentation of the alveolar ridge to facilitate retention of denture. It can also be used in cases of bony defects, cysts and traumatic bone loss by filling the gap with G-Bone. In treatment of various periodontal lesions good results may be obtained. Plastic surgery: G-Bone may be used for maxillofacial dyplasia, filling of bone defects in skull, zygomatic and mandibular area and augmentation of various bony areas. Otological surgery: It may be used for canal wall reconstruction and revalidation of old radical cavities. Neurosurgery: For neurosurgery G-Bone is a very promising implant material. It can be used to reconstruct the calvaria. Filling of burr holes, repair of cranial base and temporal bone defects following surgery. Just fill the gap using G-Bone granules, after three months it would be difficult to recognize the area on x-ray. G-bone dowell is used for fusion of spine in Cloward operation . it will save the patient from second surgery. After making hole between two vertebrae the dowell is inserted. After some time it will fuse with surrounding bone and soft tissue will grow into the G-Bone dowell. Contraindication: G-Bone is contraindicated in presence of infection and other such contraindications as for implant surgery.
Special instruments: No special instruments are required for implantation of G-Bone.
Preparation/re-shaping: G-Bone can be re-shaped using ordinary surgical instruments such as scalpel, thick needle, burrs and drills. The Hydroxyapatite is very fragile material. Care should be taken to avoid damage. It is most easy to re-shape a wet implant. Loose particles of Hydroxyapatite should be removed from the implant by rinsing it in distilled water. It is also advisable to soak the implant in a broad spectrum antibiotic for few minutes before implantation. Vascularization of implant may be checked by a bone scan or MRI. Warning: G-Bone is a new development. The efficacy and usefulness of this material is not fully established. The material should be used with caution and by experts only. Autoclaving: G-Bone is supplied sterile. If required, it can be re-sterilized using following procedure: In a clean environment and with gloved hands (wash gloves with distilled water before touching G-Bone) remove implant from its package. It should be placed directly in a stainless steel container without any covering. Autoclave for 30 minutes at 121 Celsius and 1kg/cm pressure. Any other standard autoclave cycle can also be used. Do not re-sterilize of the implant has come in contact with body fluids. The information given in this brochure is not exhaustive. It is meant for broad guidance only. The surgeon is advised to use the method which his own practice and discretion dictate to be best for the patient.
