Boy finds plastic in his peanut butter plastic jar
3/13/2009

SHELLEY - Ten year old Mason grabs a scoop of peanut butter and a banana almost every morning before starting school. Only this time he got a crunchy surprise.

"I ate glass," says Mason.
"I said you ate what! He said, 'There's glass in my peanut butter!' And I said what? So I took it apart and found out what he thought he was eating was glass," says Judy Sensavaugh, Mason's grandma.
Not quite the crisis situation Grandma thought she hand on her hands, but where did this plastic come from?

"How did plastic get in the peanut butter?" says Judy.
A question we really wanted to find out, so we searched for more clues.

"The triangle shiny spot... Oh there it is!"
We found lots of plastic, but no real answers.

"I called and said, what do you do? I Don't know what to do. I've never found stuff in my food," she adds.
First call the health department for all serious threats. Then call the manufacturer to see if they had any reports.

"Unless they find more and get more reports from other people, they're not going to do anything about it, they just said, 'Throw it away,'" she says.
All natural peanut butter with hunks of synthetic plastic. Ironically, Adam's peanut butter's claim to fame wasn't quite so natural at all.

"I just thought, oh those poor peanut butter people, that's all they need is one more incident with peanut butter," she adds.
But luckily this time, no one was harmed and they chalked it up to just a freak accident.

"I looked through it and found out it wasn't glass and so I just figured that kids eat strange things all the time, so it won't matter," says Judy.
And Mason tells me he's over it and holds no grudge against the peanut butter.

Judy and her grandson Mason are taking the jar back to Walmart for a full refund. In fact, she is just going to pick up another jar and brave the unknown.

Plastic Jar:Tips For Filling Your Plate Without Emptying Your Pockets
3/19/2009

Tips
1.Buy fresh produce in season. If it's not in season, buy frozen.

2. Watch as items are rung up to be sure you're paying the sale price.

3. The fat in peanut butter is healthful fat; it may help lower cholesterol and may prevent breast cancer, says Milton.

4. Convenience items such as bagged salad are generally less expensive, but check to see what's on sale. If you throw out half the lettuce, bagged salad on sale is a better value, says Dotson.
5.Buy large chunks of cheese, rather than small packets or pre-grated.

6.Buy 100 percent fruit juice; to save, buy frozen concentrate and make your own juice by adding water.
Healthful Snacks
1.Peanut butter with celery, broccoli, carrots or apple wedges.

2. Eat apples and cheese together. When protein combines with carbohydrates, it keeps hunger at bay longer.

3.Spoon yogurt from a larger tub into re-usable plastic containers and add granola, toasted oats or whole wheat flakes.

4.Spray popcorn with cooking spray and season with packages of ranch dressing or taco seasoning. Tastes great without the fat from butter.

5. Buy a large jar of applesauce and serve it in smaller, portable plastic containers.

6. Make pudding from a boxed mix rather than buying pudding cups.

7.Dried fruit is portable and satisfying, especially paired with nuts and/or toasted oats
